Exclusive GRAMMY.com Interview With Tig Notaro
Comedian Tig Notaro recently visited The Recording Academy’s headquarters in Santa Monica, Calif., and participated in an exclusive GRAMMY.com interview. Notaro discussed GRAMMY-winning comedian Louis C.K.’s influence on the release of her digital album Live, performing live and the darkest period of her life.
“I love making people laugh,” said Notaro. “It makes me feel so alive. … There’s an element of fear and the unkown that puts you in the present moment so instantaneously.”
Born in Jackson, Miss., and raised in Texas, Notaro launched her career as a standup comedian in 1998 in Los Angeles. In 2006 she helped launch the Crackpot Comedy Tour, a traveling showcase of comedians that also featured Martha Kelly and Kjell Bjorgen. Subsequently, Notaro has appeared in TV series such as “The Sarah Silverman Program,” “The Office” and “Community,” as well as her own half-hour special, “Comedy Central Presents: Tig.” In addition, her writing credits include the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards and the 2010 MTV movie Awards.
In 2011 Notaro released her debut comedy album, Good One, which climbed to No. 4 on Billboard‘s Top Comedy Albums chart. Notaro followed in October 2012 with the digital-only release Live, a recording of her August 2012 performance at Largo in Los Angeles during which she addressed a particularly dark time in her life, including her diagnosis with breast cancer. The album peaked at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Top Comedy Albums chart and was lauded by GRAMMY-winning comedian Louis C.K., who encouraged Notaro to release the performance. On July 16 Notaro will issue a deluxe version of Live for the first time on CD with a bonus disc, Tig Notaro Live At The Moth. A portion of the proceeds from sales of Live benefit cancer-related charities.
Notaro recently visited the GRAMMY Museum on July 15 as part of the Museum’s The Drop series, and she is currently on tour throughout the United States, with dates scheduled through January 2014. She is also scheduled to appear in upcoming films such as In A World … (Aug. 9) and Walk Of Shame (2014).
